Overview

With a focus on powering its data centres via renewable energy, PubMatic invested in enough wind and solar power annually to account for every unit of electricity used across its global data centre operations. Creating a renewable energy strategy included collaboration with data centre colocation providers and procurement of qualified renewable energy through virtual power purchase agreements (vPPA) and retail supply agreements.

What have you / are you aiming to achieve?

For all of our global data centres to be powered by 100% renewable energy, which they now are. This milestone is part of a comprehensive, multi-pronged sustainability plan that we have for 2022.

Describe how the initiative works

At PubMatic, the majority of our electricity consumption occurs within 10 global data centres, which account for over 90% of our energy usage. Because we own and operate our own infrastructure, we have greater control over how we reduce energy consumption and cut our reliance on fossil fuels. In order to move our data centres over to renewable energy, we have invested in enough wind and solar power annually to account for every unit of electricity used across our global data centre operations.

What steps have you taken to get the initiative off the ground?

Building a fully owned and operated global private cloud was the first significant step. This not only reduced our cost of operations by one-third, but also reduced the compute resources required to run our business by one-third. It’s given us more control over our data centre operations and the vendors we partner with.

Creating a renewable energy strategy included collaboration with data centre colocation providers and procurement of qualified renewable energy through virtual power purchase agreements (vPPA) and retail supply agreements.

As well as shifting to renewable energy, a focus on infrastructure efficiency is helping to drive down our carbon emissions – which is both good for the sustainability of the environment and our business.

What positive impact have these efforts had?

The switch to renewable energy is a milestone achievement for us. According to the World Economic Forum, the infrastructure powering the internet accounts for 2.5% of worldwide electricity consumption – so the fact that our 10 global data centres, which account for over 90% of our company’s energy usage, will have a hugely positive impact on our carbon output.

Can you provide a quote?

“The digital advertising supply chain of the future will be transparent and efficient, and it will also be responsible. The advertising industry must focus on reducing its environmental impact and prioritise sustainability in infrastructure and operational practices. I am proud of what PubMatic has been able to achieve to date, and it is just the first step towards building a more environmentally sustainable business.”
