Overview
We created the first tree-planting incentive programme in influencer marketing SaaS, transforming how brands manage their digital footprint. Through our partnership with fellow B Corp Tree-Nation, every archived campaign on Kolsquare plants a tree, addressing the environmental cost of unnecessary data storage.
The challenge was clear: teams create approximately 4,000 campaigns monthly but archive only 100, creating server load, storage bloat, and avoidable emissions. Archiving simply wasn't a priority because it offered no immediate reward.
The solution combines behavioural psychology with sustainability impact. By framing archiving as both a practical benefit (cleaner workspace, better performance) and environmental contribution (verified tree planting), we made sust
What did we set out to achieve?
- Drive industry behaviour change: Establish archiving as standard practice in influencer marketing, reducing the sector's digital carbon footprint
- Generate measurable environmental impact: Plant thousands of trees whilst demonstrating how sustainability can be embedded into product usage
- Create advocacy and word-of-mouth: Transform customers into sustainability advocates, strengthening community engagement around responsible marketing practices
Describe how the initiative or campaign works?
When users archive an inactive campaign in Kolsquare, three things happen simultaneously: the platform stops collecting new posts (reducing server load and CO₂ emissions), the user's workspace becomes cleaner and more performant, and Kolsquare plants a tree through Tree-Nation in the user's name. Users receive a Tree-Nation email allowing them to claim their tree and track its environmental impact across certified reforestation projects in Mozambique, Tanzania, Indonesia, Kenya, and the United States. Archived campaigns remain accessible but stop generating unnecessary data overhead. The system includes monthly planting caps with transparent messaging: if the cap is reached, users still benefit from reduced CO₂ through archiving, with additional trees planted the following month.
What was the first step you took to get it off the ground?
Establishing the Tree-Nation partnership with verified, transparent impact tracking. Tree-Nation's B Corp status and certified reforestation projects were essential—users needed to trust their archiving action created genuine environmental benefit, not greenwashing.
Who are the internal business partners you brought on board? Are there any external stakeholders you spoke to for advice?
We partnered with Tree-Nation, a fellow B Corp with certified global reforestation projects. Their transparent tracking system allows users to receive individual emails claiming their tree and seeing exactly which project it supports—mangrove restoration in Mozambique, poverty alleviation through agroforestry in Tanzania, or Eden Reforestation in Indonesia.
What budget/resource did you need?
Tree-planting costs per archived campaign, customer education materials (video explainers, in-platform messaging, email sequences), and measurement infrastructure tracking adoption rates, CO₂ reduction, and trees planted.

How do you keep it going?
Monthly impact reporting showing trees planted and CO₂ offset, customer spotlights celebrating "Top Tree Planters, " and the Tree-Nation forest dashboard where the entire community can track Kolsquare's cumulative environmental contribution.
What positive impact has this initiative or campaign had?
Through our Tree-Nation partnership, Kolsquare has planted 25,539 trees, reforested 26.52 hectares, and captured 1,825.41 tonnes of CO₂ across projects in Mozambique, Tanzania, Indonesia, Kenya, and the United States. The archiving initiative has accelerated this impact, transforming routine platform maintenance into measurable environmental contribution. The feature has repositioned archiving from a neglected admin task to a proactive sustainability action users track alongside campaign performance metrics.

What did you learn that could help others?
- Dual value is essential. Sustainability initiatives fail when they add friction or feel like virtue signalling. Archiving needed to solve an immediate user problem (workspace clutter, platform performance) whilst delivering environmental impact. Purpose-driven features must enhance workflows, not compete with them.
- Transparency builds credibility. Users don't trust generic "carbon offset" claims. Providing individual Tree-Nation emails with specific project details (Mozambique mangroves, Tanzanian poverty alleviation) and showing exactly which hectares were reforested transformed this from marketing messaging into verifiable impact.
- Micro-actions scale. We initially questioned whether one tree per archived campaign was "meaningful enough. " In practice, small, frequent actions create sustained engagement better than large, abstract commitments. Users now ask "how many trees have we planted?" as a retention metric.
- B2B procurement increasingly evaluates sustainability infrastructure. Enterprise buyers asked detailed questions about Tree-Nation's B Corp status, project verification, and carbon accounting methodology. Sustainability is shifting from "nice-to-have" differentiation to vendor selection criteria, particularly in sustainability-conscious markets like the UK.
How will you make the benefit of this initiative or campaign endure?
We're positioning this model as a replicable framework for the marketing technology sector, not a proprietary Kolsquare feature. By openly sharing our methodology at industry events, sustainability conferences, and through IAB UK, we're encouraging competitors and adjacent platforms to adopt similar approaches. The more platforms embed sustainability into user workflows, the greater the collective environmental impact. Crucially, we're making impact visible and shareable. Users can now track their cumulative environmental contribution alongside campaign performance metrics, transforming individual actions into measurable outcomes they can report to their own stakeholders. This positions sustainable platform usage as a business metric, not just a feel-good add-on. The long-term goal: establish archiving and responsible data management as industry standard practice, making digital sustainability as fundamental to influencer marketing as performance measurement.
